Culinary Team Takes Second Place

Thursday, February 23

Students Melanie Palumbo (12), Yesenia Jimenez (11), Angel Lamegos (10), and Genaro Salgado (10) took home second this weekend at the first culinary competition of the year, the Hospitality Scholarship Foundation's Innovation Competition. Our students were given root vegetables as a secret ingredient and made a Carrot-Goat Cheese Ravioli (from scratch), a Vegetarian Shepards Pie with turnips, parsnips, and sweet potatoes, and a Parsnip Cake with Carrot Ice Cream. Please congratulate them if you see them around!

STEM (Science) Fair

Monday, February 3

After months of preparation, three of our Juarez students competed in the regional STEM fair on January 23rd.  Violeta Lanza, Francisco Pantoja, and Anayely Reyes-Trejo all received “outstanding” awards and will be moving on to the city-wide 2020 exhibition of student STEM research hosted by IIT in March! Please be sure to congratulate them on their hard work and dedication and feel free to ask them about their projects!

If you would like to attend the fair it will be open to the public on Saturday, March 21st in Herman Hall at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Please reach to Ms. Sullivan for more information.

Chicagoland Drill Competition

Monday, February 3

On Saturday, February 1, 2020, Benito Juarez’s JROTC drill and color guard teams headed north to Wheeling, Illinois to compete against 19 teams in the Chicagoland Drill Competition hosted by Wheeling High School.  Cadet Jose Ramirez commanded and led a squad of eight cadets in the First Year Cadet Squad event. Cadet Ramirez’s great poise and confidence resulted in his squad of first year cadets marching away with a fourth place finish.  The entire drill and color guard teams executed very well and continue to make Juarez proud.

Robotics Competition

Monday, February 3

3758 IS GOING TO STATE! THE EIGHT YEAR DROUGHT IS OVER!

All five Juarez Robotics teams competed at the FIRST Tech Challenge Chicago South League Championship yesterday at Horizon Science Academy McKinley Park. While the high stakes of the event caused some teams to break, other teams rose to the challenge. Team 12905, one of our Senior-science class based teams, ended the qualification round ranked seventh in the city and was picked to compete in the playoffs. By the end of the day 12905 went home with the Highest Ranked Rookie award and was a member of the 2nd place alliance.

The big news of the day was that team 3758, our after-school team, went on to win the Connect Award as a recognition of their work to share robotics with the Pilsen community, and the 3rd place Inspire Award, which recognizes them as one of the best teams in the city. Their winning of the 3rd place Inspire Award qualified them for the State Championship! A Juarez team has not made it to the Illinois State Championship since 2012, so this is incredible news for the team! Stay tuned for more details on how you can help us make it to State on February 21-22!
